Indian seafarers? union launches roundtable event

19 October 2012

Hard on the heels of the ITF?s maritime roundtable in Morocco at the end of September, an Indian seafarers? union has organised a roundtable event of its own.

The ITF-affiliated National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) held the first in a series of NUSI roundtable (NRT) events on 5 October, following the experiences of Abulgani Y Serang, the union?s general secretary-cum-treasurer, at the ITF maritime roundtable from 25-27 September in Casablanca. Held in NUSI?s offices, the first NRT involved some 30 NUSI staff members working in administration and organising.

The participants gathered in five groups to discuss 15 key issues, including communication and information sharing, handling grievances, interacting with members, companies and the government and enhancing skills. They also tackled ways of assisting members, for example, by providing information and advice about employment issues and consistent and timely help with grievances. Activities for women and young workers were a highlight of the event.

On 17 October, the groups reported back on how best to take forward the issues, outlining a number of action points. These included, to organise interactive meetings with young and women workers, create healthy relations within the NUSI office and develop ways of increasing the union?s finances.

Serang said: "The session was well appreciated by everybody and we are sure of a positive interaction for the benefit of NUSI and the seafarers. This will now be a regular and dedicated feature of our activities."

The ITF is asking all participants of the ITF maritime roundtable in Casablanca to tell us what you got out of it by filling in this online survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PY7BB3B. Check into www.dockers-seafarers.org, where you can interact with your MRT colleagues.
